Bouncing about
In order to maximize our time trekking through the alps (and maybe because we just cant deal with easy riding), we hopped a train from linz to salzburg. The european train system makes it very easy to make last minute travel plans.
The danube trail was great – it seemed like there was a castle or monastary peeking out at us around every bend in the river. Linz was a bit of a letdown – it seemed like a great city, but we had much difficulty locating the famous linzer torte ted told us about.
We have many tales to tell, but they’ll likely have to wait until we make it back to the states before they make it up here – we’re having too much fun to sit in front of a computer! (we’re only here now because we’re waiting for laundry to dry.)
Almost ready

Made it up through the delta and met rai at the train station right on time. ate lunch at the foot of the capital, where jeff raided our state orange tree. Had a great – though hot ride up the american river bike path to folsom. Lots of cyclists. Dined on spaghetti-os and beer. Quote of the day – there.

Bit of a rough start this morning. Cyclists beware! Don’t try to ride from Folsom to lincoln. You’ll find yourself in some endless purgatory of labrynthian sub-developments and sprawling strip malls, where people don’t know how to go 5 miles without a freeway. Once we escaped that mess, we got on much nicer quiet back roads. We also found the cheapest shakes since 1985 in wheatland. Now we’re camping on a beach on the feather river. This is pretty great! Should hit chico tomorrow and we’ll find out if lassen is too smokey for us to climb.

It’s been a great couple of days! Christian and theresa were once again awesome hosts – it was fun to hang out with the kids. The climb up lassen was probably the hardest i’ve ever done – 8300 ft in 2 days. The scenery once we entered the park made it worth the climb. There were a few times i’d cursed the extra weight of the clarinet i’d been carrying, but it paid off when jeff and i started jamming ‘eye of the tiger’ at the summit. Jeff the madman made a solo ascent of the peak, while we met up w/marcus the road angel – beer and truffles! – and coasted down. The next day megan and i bade our escort goodbye. It was rad riding with everyone – we’ll miss having such great company. Now that our bicycle armada is gone, we’re taking a short day to recouperate. got a late start fixing megan’s broken spoke plus we had a head wind and some cutoff grades to climb, so we took it slow. We’ve met cool people, none of whom want to live in oakland.
